So often I chat to parents about the constant cold that kindly shares itself back and forth between family members. This cranky cold causes sleeplessness nights, missed school days, maybe a little of the dreaded man flu and many used up sick days!
We too come across this cheeky virus and so I thought I would share with you my top tips for getting through it this winter.
The idea here is to make sure that we are treating the cause before we treat the symptoms. Preventing germs being carried across the threshold, building the immune system and killing any lingering airborne bacteria in the house.
Ill’s share with you a few tips that are vital to supporting the immune system this winter and then some easy steps you can implement into your daily life to keep the bad arse bugs at bay.
LET’S TALK SUPPORT
Our bodies are our temples, if we didn’t have the infrastructure for our temple to stay standing, it would collapse, so no pillars, structural walls, plaster boards etc. then we pretty much have a temple that caves in every time the wind blows.
Supporting your temple (AKA the immune system) is what we need to consider when the dreaded lurgy starts hitting us hard. Leading up to the colder months we can start by building some of those infrastructures with my top two tips…
- OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT
Some 5 years ago now I noticed my girlfriend rarely got sick, winter would come and go and here I was locked up, red nosed and feeling sorry for myself. I asked my wise and flu-free friend what she did… the answer… Olive Leaf Extract. There many studies done on this wonder leaf and I could go on and on about the health benefits but for the purpose of todays blog I will keep it simple, the powerful compounds that are found in olive leaves, help to destroy invading organisms …. SAY WHAT? Yep, it is seriously amazing stuff. I take this daily most of the year round and I up it to a double dose when I start to feel the slight symptom of a cold coming on. I swear by it and although it’s kind of harsh when going down I figure no pain no gain and when it comes to olive leaf extract the gain is HUGE.
- VITAMINS IN THE FORM OF BROTH
This is one of the easiest ways to ensure that you and your family are getting those nutrient dense goodies into your system that are easily processed and absorbed by the body, and in turn support the immune system.
Now most people when they think of broth, they think of bone broth, this may by fine for folks like my meat-eating husband but not for this vego! The process of making broth can be a little time consuming to start but once it’s all in the pot then you let the pot do the work.
The benefits of broth are MAJOR! Not only do they contain MANY vital nutrients and vitamins, but broth also helps to heal the gut, now when it comes to sneaky viruses a healthy gut flora is key to recovery. We want our system firing on all cylinders, with guns a blazing. Broth is also anti-inflammatory and of course strengthens the immune system.
You can be experimental with your veggies, but you want to make sure that you have all colours of the rainbow. Celery is my top pick – green leaves and all. Then you load your pot up with herbs and spices, fresh or dried, topped up with vegetable stock and let it simmer away. Get creative, research the benefits of each veggie and make what feels right to you.
KEEPING THE BAD ARSE BUGS AT BAY
Sharing is caring they say and when it comes to it, those bugs know how to do it right, in fact I would go as far as saying those damn bugs could teach my kids a thang or two!
We can, however, take on the bugs and kill some of the airborne bacteria that lingers in the air from a cough or a sneeze. My go to hear is antiviral and antibacterial essential oils. The most common ones are peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree and lavender. Australia and its fine land make some of the most killer antiviral and antibacterial essential oils known to man and lemon myrtle essential oil has to be one of my top picks. To be honest I could go on and on as I LOVE essential oils, but I promise I won’t.
Adding anyone one of these essential oils into your cleaning routine is going to help kill germs and bugs alike.
- Add a few drops to your mop bucket when washing your floors.
- Diffuse any of these oils or use Ziel’s decongest me blend in a diffuser. Our decongest me blend is FULL of those virus killing oils.
- Roll with it and apply essential oils, diluted in a carrier oil of course, on your children or yourself before you leave the house with a pulse point roll on to create a barrier of protection.
- Alternatively invest in Ziel’s winter relief balm, I slather my kiddies in this before they go to school everyday and place it on the soles of their feet at night before bed, to support their respiratory system.
- Place a drop or two on your dishcloth before wiping down benches.
